Term Definition
Bat Guano

An organic fertilizer that contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. It is a natural nematocide and fungicide. Beneficial Insects-insects that help with the process of pest control, and work in symbiotic relationships with plants (see also parasitic insects)

 

Bed

A specific garden area in which plants are grouped together to create a unified design.

Bedding Plant

Plants (mainly annuals), nursery grown and suitable for growing in beds. Quick, colorful flowers.

Biennial

A plant that usually only lives two years, normally producing flowers and seed the second year.

Biodiesel

A type of diesel made from biological, or plant produced substances. It has been found to produce a much lower amount of CO2 emissions. Biodiversity-the variation of plant and animal life that naturally occurs in ecosystems. Biodiversity is used to measure the health of an ecosystem, the higher the biodiversity the healthier the ecosystem.

Biological Pest Control

Also known as beneficial insects, this form of pest control utilizes insects as natural predators to eliminate pest insects.

Bipinnate

Compound leaf structures with a feather-like formation of leaflets arranged in pairs, with each leaflet also pinnately divided into pairs.

Bolt

When leaf crops (such as spinach and cabbage) stop producing leaves and send up seed stalks due to warming weather.

Bolting

Vegetables which quickly go to flower rather than producing the food crop. Usually caused by late planting and too warm temperatures.

Bonsai

The art of growing carefully trained, dwarf plants in containers.

Botanical Name

The scientific name of a plant, usually composed of two words,the genus and the species.

Bract

Modified scale-like leaves, usually growing just below a flower or flower cluster. Often confused with petals or the flower itself, as in the case of "Dogwoods" or "Poinsettias".

 

Broadcast

To randomly disperse seeds or other material across a set area.

Bud

Early stages of development of a flower or plant growth.

Bulb

The thickened underground storage organ of the group of perennials which includes daffodils and tulips.
